During my breast cancer trial, I learned 3 crucial practices in order to stay connected to God. I had stumbled into my faith those years preceding my cancer and it all became clear the day I was diagnosed. [You can read about that HERE and HERE.] These can be used for any tough times you are facing.
1. Prayer
Prayer was the first thing I did after my diagnosis. I knew how important it was to cry out to God with all my fears, thoughts, and hopes. The evening of my diagnosis, I called people. and had them call more people. Everyone and anyone I could think of that would “storm heaven” (as my late Uncle Don would say) on my behalf.
It was not only my personal prayers, but those of others that impacted me and kept me close to God. Knowing His children were collectively coming together to raise their voice on my behalf was a comfort. Those connections of prayer in our community held me up. They arrived in various forms of:
- Prayer warriors
- Prayer meetings
- Letters, emails, and texts
- Personal meetings
2. Scripture
Digging deep in the Word. What better way to connect with God, than to hear it straight from His Word. One of the first verses I read after my breast cancer diagnosis was James 1:2-4. At the time, it seemed contradictory, but I was completely fascinated by it. Little did I know that it would become one of my life verses.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. ~ James 1:2-4
Reading God’s word was absolutely crucial for me. I started a Bible plan of reading parts of the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs everyday. Throughout my journey of wellness, I’ve utilized:
- Bible apps on my phone
- Devotionals
- Podcasts
- Video teaching
- Church
- Bible Studies (both independently and with groups)
Writing out all my fears, emotions and what I was learning from Scripture was so helpful in staying connected to God. I would write out questions, thoughts, and nuggets of wisdom I received from my Scripture reading. Sifting through the whispers that came from God after I poured out my heart into my journal was affirming of His presence.
- Writing out my conversations with God
- Details surrounding my journey so I could see how far I’ve come
- Writing out Prayers and Praises to focus on the good – choosing Joy
Although I had my breast cancer trial in mind when creating this article, I realized that this is tremendously applicable to any trial we are facing. I hope you find comfort in these practices and know you are so loved and not alone.
